Canadian Salt Contract Highlights

          We have 25 members and 6 retirees. Our group performs general clerical office work with some technical laboratory analysis.  Employees in the laboratory department work days and afternoon shifts,
          Our members are represented by three Committeepersons,
          One of which is also the chairperson. We have a very unique geographic design with 25 members in three different locations within a 4 mile radius. Our committee is as follows: 
- Ojibway mine office    Committeeperson   8 employees 
- Windsor fine salt plant office Committeeperson - 6 employees
- Windsor main office Committeeperson - 6 employees plus 5 Utility relief (floaters)
          One member of the committee from each of the Ojibway and Windsor locations also sits as a member of that location's joint health and safety committee, we have negotiated protection for our members that should there be a geographical merger of one or more of the locate we would still maintain three representatives.
          Our lowest populated classification is paid $24.014 per hour and our highest populated classification is paid $26.402 per hour. Our grade scale goes from a grade 1 classification to a grade classification with grades 1, 2 and 11 not being populated. Each grade has three steps consisting of the starting rate, three month rate-and one year rate. Most of our employees are straight day shift workers with the exception of our laboratory technicians (2) who work days and afternoons. Afternoon shift pays a premium of .40/hour and we also have a midnight shift premium of .55/hour if anyone should be assigned to a midnight shift, some job classifications from grade 7 and up are temporarily assigned supervisor's duties (non-disciplinary) during a supervisor's absence, when this occurs, the employee receives $1,75 premium per hour.
 In addition to 8 statutory holidays, we have negotiated holidays for Easter Monday, Civic Holiday, Remembrance Day, day before Christmas, day after Christmas (in addition to Boxing Day), day before New Years and employee's birthday.
           Normal retirement age is 65, however an employee may take the early retirement option at age 55 with 30 years service. Pensions are based on 1% of average annual earnings of the employee's best five years for each year of service, pensions are vested after two years of service.  If an employee takes the early retirement option the company also pays a bridge of $450 per month to age 60, reducing to $275 per month to age 65.  The pension fund is fully funded by the company.
          Our benefits consist of the following:
-  Green Shield drug plan with $1.00 co-pay
-  Green Shield semi-private
-  Green Shield dental & ortho (ortho coverage of $1500 lifetime)
-  Green Shield extended health plan including nursing home care, hearing aids, prosthetics and vision care ($175/two years)
-  Green shield out of province coverage
-  Life insurance coverage of $36,000 (company pays premium on $34,500. Company paid portion is increased at negotiations every 3 years)
-  Disability wage plan fully paid by the company and administered at the local plant site
-  Long term disability plan - $1,500 per month with no carve out     Administered by Sun Life Assurance Company
- Continuation of health benefits for dependent surviving spouse and eligible dependents. In the event of the death of an employee or pensioner, for a period of 4 years.
-  P.E.L. - 2 cents per hour per employee for all hours worked
-  Leaves of absence - 5 weeks over the life of the agreement plus compassionate leave of absence for period of up to 30 days.
-  Service, Seniority and benefits continue during leaves of absence.

          Vacation schedules are based on seniority as follows:

 1 year service   =  2 weeks vacation
 5 years service  =  3 weeks vacation
 12 years service =  4 weeks vacation
 20 years service =  5 weeks vacation
 25 years service =  6 weeks vacation

          Vacation requests are accepted until April 1 and the vacation schedule is prepared no later than April 15th. based on seniority.  Vacation requests received after April 15th are granted subject to availability and subject to the operation of the department, vacations are taken from January 1 to December 31 of each year. (No carry over to the next calendar year.
